Week Six TV Studio – and Live show!

This week really consisted of one practise session on Monday the 13th of May, and our live performance on the following day!

Our practise session went really well!

Obviously we had some technical difficulties – let’s face it, where there is technology there will always be some sort of problem but we overcame them fairly efficiently and we were running through the entire show with minimal problems – and we were right on the twelve minute mark!


The live performer turned up so I was able to do a soundcheck with him and then all my levels were set and ready. We set up the SM58 microphones – they were going to be slightly awkward as they would have to be sneakily stored away out of sight and then during ‘Rey’s review’ VT as the whole set shifted, the microphones would also need to be plugged in, set up, and positioned. Changing the set itself had no problems when we ran through it, although one of the microphone stands became loose and did not stay up for the singer to sing into. But we got around this by taping the microphone stand into place! And I managed to set the levels and mix the sound down well with no problems.

We have all of our timings, the set looks great, lighting is looking effective – and it was decided a black out just before the performance would be a better transition, which was all looking good. With everybody feeling confident about our final rehearsal, yet still slightly nervous about the following day we packed away and decided for everyone to meet in Ellen Terry at 10:30am to be ready with the equipment at 11am. I noticed a few problems with the radio microphones cutting out at the end of the session, they worked fine on the most part but I asked if it was possible to hire an extra rifle microphone, just in case!

Everybody arrived bright and early at Ellen Terry and we set up in ten minutes, it was all looking good but there were still strange static noises coming through the radio microphones: which the group before had problems with as well. It turns out the lavalier packs were running on the same frequencies so we quickly changed them onto different frequencies and they didn’t give us any problems after that. We had both rifle microphones feeding through sound just in case a microphone cut out, but I had one muted at all time so the levels didn’t go too high. Another problem sound wise, though the SM58 microphones both worked for the first run through, I stopped getting a signal through on one of them after that, I told studio sound and I suggested putting the rifle microphone facing the performer, within three feet so that the sound didn’t come off as ‘too distant’, a common effect of the rifle microphone. I wasn’t entirely happy using the rifle mic, but it was just to get the ambient sound and pick up what it could – otherwise the guitar was barely coming through. I worked with what I had. When you’re mixing live you can alter any problems as they come and fix them pretty quickly so overall, I think it came out well in the end.

We got about four takes in, and yes there were minor problems in each of them but we overcame every problem as quickly as we could during the shoot, we worked as a team and acted professionally. We all made sure our guests were comfortable, especially our expert – he gave us all lots of extra information for our websites and his interview went really went; obviously it can be pretty intimidating working with a group of students, but we were all really friendly and professional and he seemed happy.

So, these six weeks have flown by – and I’m really proud of the whole crew, we all did really well and I’m proud of everyone, well done guys!

This final module has gone by so quickly, and it seems strange that only a few weeks ago none of us had stepped in a TV studio before; but despite that, yesterday we produced a show that we are all proud of. Yes, it wasn’t perfect, things went wrong, but in my opinion we all worked together so well, Laura and Ross (producer and director) did an amazing job of organising everything and keeping us all informed and up to date, so I’m really proud of us all.

Sound wise, specifically, there were a good few problems! Whilst setting up I went to sound check the radio microphones and realised we were getting a lot of interference, it was beginning to look as though we wouldn’t be able to use them at all – I did ask the producer to book out extra rifle microphones in case the radio microphones didn’t work properly, but you can’t control the sound levels as well without them, and it’s important to mix down all the individual voices. Luckily, Paul was on hand in the office and I quickly asked him why they weren’t working. It turns out some of the radio microphones had been put on the same frequency, so we changed each pack to a different frequency, it wasn’t perfect because we didn’t know what frequency we should have been on (we would need to ask at the media loan shop) but there was minimal, if no static or interference after that and we got started straight away.

There was a few things I would have liked to do differently, I wanted to fade down the music on some of the VTs using the channel faders but I couldn’t un-mute all of the presenters, expert, and rifle mic at the same time as fading it down, which was a nuisance as it would have sounded a lot better. Also, one of our SM58 microphones for the final performance stopped working halfway through our studio time, we didn’t really have the time to fix it so a rifle mic was positioned by the performer to pick up some sound – though rifle microphones really do not work great for musical performances. Overall, there was no peaking, all the sound was cued and muted at the right time and the audio came through clear so it was a success.


Overall, the 161 module has ranged from creating modernised fairytale stories, making mash-up videos, and finally…the TV studio task. I personally enjoyed the TV studio and whole second half of the module more than the first. I understand that the fairytale task helps us to think about multi-platform media and the ways we can use social media to our advantage but I didn’t feel very involved in the first half of the module because we were working in groups and there wasn’t much to do. However, in the TV studio we all had our separate roles and separate experiences. Every role was a really important link, and if people didn’t turn up it effected the rest of us. We did have a few people not turning up a lot, obviously if you have a genuine reason and let the producer know it’s completely understandable; but we had a bit of a struggle filling in for people who weren’t there, and trying to work around it. But everybody turned up on the day and set up within 15 minutes.

I have definitely learnt a lot about the industry, social media, our own personal profiles, and teamwork. I’m currently working on a better logo for my profile, and constantly putting my name out there, applying for jobs, voluntary work, internships etc as often as I can and keeping my appearance on social networking sites professional. I think Transmedia was the most interesting and helpful part of the module because it’s a new phenomenon, which has changed the way we see and interact with the media. I’ve got more experience now with creating my own facebook page for my films and

work, as well as interacting with media businesses and companies through Twitter, such as: UK360, Media Volt, ITV careers etc. This way I can get involved with their work and keep up to date on projects and workers needed. It’s so important to stay up to date with the media trends and stay in the know of what is going on in the industry, and what will be the next big thing. If you’re not going to keep on top of the way the media world is working then you won’t get anywhere, it changes so often. I’ve also been involved with an upcoming short film with a few other students and we created a wix website for the film, facebook page, and twitter page so we can start gaining an audience, interact with the audience and publicise our work – and it’s working.

I now have valuable industry experience, and have a much better idea of what it is like to work in a TV studio. We know more about all of the roles, how important they are and how to work under pressure – as well as gaining first hand experience with the equipment. I had never seen a vision mixer before this module! Now I know how to use one and much more other professional equipment.

For the television studio task, we were put into groups and allocated themes. Our group was given the theme of ‘fantasy’, so we all met up to discuss some possibilities for the content of our show – and with fantasy being a very broad topic, we ended up having a lot of really engaging ideas. Before the first meeting we produced a group Facebook page so that we could all keep in constant contact and start brainstorming straight away through the use of polls – which helped us see what area of fantasy the group was leaning towards, this way we had the key speaking points of the group meeting ready.

We came up with a number of possible ideas for our shows content, which included:

  • Mystical creatures – discussion of the existence of fairies, vampires, werewolves etc. which would include videos, sightings, witnesses – possible interviews with a fantasy creature.
  • A show that is based on another planet and includes characters from Star Wars or Lord of the Rings etc. – interviews with beings such as wizards or iconic characters like Darth Vader who discuss human activity – ‘Have you ever seen a human?’ segments etc.
  • A show that reviews recently released fantasy films; this would include trailers, posters, interviews with critics and directors; as well as upcoming fantasy films.
  • Discuss and debate a controversial issue – a different topic would be discussed every week – to include: interviews with witnesses/experts, videos of sightings etc.

We ran through the pros and cons of each idea, originally we were leaning towards the inclusion of typical fantasy characters but the cost may have been too high, and there is always a chance that it would end up looking amature.

Eventually we decided upon the idea of debating controversial issues, and this week would be looking at the existence of UFOs!

This topic is particularly accessible. People have been discussing and questioning the reality of UFOs for years, and there is plenty of information, films, YouTube video sightings, and most importantly – people have very strong personal views and opinions on the topic. I did some research into UFOs; the earliest recorded sighting I found dates all the way back to 329 BC witnessed by Alexander the great in central Asia who saw two great “flying shields”. *read more about this case and more here: http://www.ufoevidence.org/Cases/CaseView.asp?section=sortoldest

It appears that the UFO phenomenon has been apparent throughout recorded history, and have remained consistent in the appearance of a ‘flying saucer’ and the experiences in general appear fairly similar. From this, we can see that the existence of UFOs have always been present, and highly intriguing as the reality of such things would completely change the way we look at the Universe – which is what makes it such a good theme for our show.

The main structure of our TV show fell into place fairly quickly, we had a good idea of how to make our show as interesting as possible, and meet the requirements of the module. The set design is very important for our show, we really wanted to capture the right look to create an engaging outer-space style, fitting our theme nicely. This included some key focal points that we thought would accentuate the fantasy theme. Such as:

  1. Lava lamps – lit up
  2. Plasma Balls (and stand)
  3. Black drapes on the backdrop
  4. Glow in the dark stars stuck on backdrop
  5. Bright coloured objects – luminous green cushions (for a sofa/chair)

  2. rug to cover the floor (black)
  3. glasses of water on the table
  4. sofa
  5. A laptop on the table – for Twitter interaction, notes etc.

We did initially discuss the possibility of chroma keying, as we do possess the necessary equipment in the TV studio. We could have given a more 3D outer space effect. It would have been cheaper than buying a backdrop, and easier – if somebody had used it before or was familiar with it. Unfortunately nobody had used it before, and we decided we could make a good backdrop ourselves, and hopefully it would be fairly cheap – this was easier than the possibility of the chroma key not working or experiencing technical difficulty on the day, as it would possibly take up more of our time especially with nobody having prior experience with it.

Our producer managed to get us sponsored, so we received £80 from our sponsor, which was a massive help and we put this money towards our set, so it ended up working in our favour anyhow!

Laura – the producer also made some on screen graphics for the intro and outro to our show. It’s really in keeping with the theme and looks great. Director Ross also made graphics using after effects for our ‘coming up’ section so these graphics alone should hook the viewers straight away.

VT’s are an incredibly important part of any magazine show, and we were lucky as there are many UFO viral videos on YouTube. We discussed are VT’s at length, as we wanted them to really engage the audience and make them think. We wanted two YouTube home sightings of UFOs and quickly decided we could get the audience to vote for which video seemed more realistic via Twitter by #DoYouBelieve. Furthering our audience participation, our VT team went onto the streets of Coventry and asked the public their opinions on the subject. We thought it would be best for our third presenter to appear in the final VT, so they could discuss what was shown on the show after. This VT was entitles ‘Rey’s Review’ – which consisted of our presenter reviewing a UFO documentary ‘I Know What I Saw’.

Multi-platform delivery of media content and Transmedia

facebook-logoThat is around quarter of the population of the world! And this number is increasing. This information alone shows the impact that technology has on the world as we know it. The internet is incredibly influential and most people use it as a source for credible information; specifically searching on popular searching sites such as Google and more recently, social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter or video sharing sites such as YouTube and Vimeo. The most popular site of course being Facebook, it only went public in 2006 (was a college based site from 2004) it was recently stated that the user total of Facebook in 2013 was 1.11 billion users! It’s not just your average Joe using Facebook either, businesses quickly realised that the popularity of these sites opened up a quick and easy way for them to raise awareness for anything be it: music, film, TV shows, or even small family owned businesses for cake shops or restaurants…the possibilities are endless. So yes, all the big companies use social media sites and pay the small fee for advertisements to further promote their work. But these aren’t the only people who can use social media sites to get their work known world wide, due to the accessibility and free aspect of these platforms, people can now make a living off YouTube (though it’s not always easy). All because of multi-platform delivery of media content. I can upload a film onto Vimeo and YouTube for free – or pay a small advertisement fee for more promotion – this video could go viral due to popularity, or be seen by bigger companies and institutions. And you don’t just have to stick to one site, I could then make an official Facebook and Twitter page for this film, blog about it and create a website for it, instagram and put it on LinkedIn – and all of these things can be interlinked.

A good example of the way in which we can utilise the internet to increase the awareness and grossing a film makes is Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 3’ – Yes, this film would have grossed an amazingly high income with or without the use of the internet, as it did for the first film. But Toy story marketers came up with some great ideas through incorporating and embracing multi-platform media. They used the internet and went viral with videos on YouTube and the official website, videos such as ‘Ken’s dating tips’, ‘meet Lots o’ Huggin Bear’, as well as a comical IM chat between Woody and Buzz that went viral and much more. – http://www.traileraddict.com/trailer/toy-story-3/viral-trailer-im

They also used Facebook apps which allowed fans to buy tickets through Facebook in advance, and even apps that decide which Toy Story 3 character you are. There are countless Twitter profiles for the characters and the film itself so fans can get involved, they can Tweet the director, actors who voiced characters etc. or ‘Retweet’ things that the official film pages have tweeted, so all of the fans friends can then see what Toy Story are Tweeting without even following them. The same applies to Facebook through ‘sharing’ or ‘likes’.

Obviously, the big productions like Toy Story use all these social media sites and more to market their film, and it is successful. But small, independent films and documentaries and such can post and go viral or get noticed. UK360 hire researchers to search through the internet to find documentaries and films produced by small businesses and students, which they then put on their own sites and show on the television. Even as a student myself I use multiplatform media, our upcoming short film ‘Once Bitten Twice Shy’ has Facebook pages, websites, Twitter accounts, we blog about it regularly (as I’m sure you have all noticed). But we do all this to raise awareness, and it is working! I can ‘share’ the Facebook page for the film, and suddenly over 600 people have seen the page. This has helped us build an audience, and get funding and when the film is finished it will help us distribute and allow the film to be seen by as many people as possible.

Social networking sites have also grasped onto this new phenomenon and offer ‘related ads’ to personally specify what adverts will appeal to each individual – it might be in the form of who you follow, what video you should watch, what product you might like or links you should check out – such as IMDB or rotten tomatoes!

This 161 module has shown the importance of Transmedia, we found this from our ‘fairytale’ task, which incorporated Transmedia at its best – expressing a narrative through a variety of media platforms. I have linked this very blog to my Twitter and Facebook sites so whenever I post, all my Twitter followers and Facebook friends can see it and access it easily. It is so important and my blog views go up so much more than they did before I had linked to social media sites – I can safely say that my blog would not have half as many views without it being fed through these sites. You have to be constantly active and being available on a variety of different sites keeps my activity log up, I do not blog every week but I may Tweet or Facebook media-related posts, or I may ‘like’ or ‘reblog’ a wordpress blog. This gets you more followers on wordpress, more comments of your own and more likes.

Professional Development 161

The 161 module is based around learning how to create an impact and professional image in the media industry – predominantly through online social media and how we can expand and improve our professional profiles.

One of the first tasks of the 161 module included creating an individual brand logo, which helped us think about how we want to be identified and perceived in the professional world.

The internet is the best and easiest way to get your work known, and to get involved with projects and companies. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter definitely have had a huge impact on my development in the professional world. From specially set up Facebook groups such as ‘Professional opportunities’ to Twitter sites such as @ITVCareers and @UK360 allposting the latest opportunities for media hopefuls. The internet provides a chance to apply for apprenticeships and internships, with a wide range of choices. Personally, I have applied for ITV, BBC, Lime Productions, radio etc. and it would be naive to think that these companies do not check out your personal profiles (some sites require you to make your own on profile with portfolios, pictures, personal info for easier access). With this in mind, I have been attempting to create a professional appearance on my social networking sites (not always easy when you’re a student). I have been particularly careful with my Twitter account, I have linked my blog to my social networking sites for easy access to my work, and this seems to have had a positive reaction. For a start, I was recently ‘followed’ on Twitter by UK360, and have now got involved with their work as a researcher and the chance to be credited if my research is used. There are many other opportunities available in UK360, which I have discussed  with them in terms of opportunities with script editing etc. and I am excited to see where it goes.

I think your online identity is incredibly important, and a consistent style leaves you memorable to producers and companies looking for workers. Because of this I am progressing with my own logo design, I am not entirely pleased with my first original design, though there are aspects of it that I am fond of, such as the eye with the bright flare inside it. The idea sparked that I could create a logo that was based around an eye with the reflection of a video camera inside, as this is a direct connotation of the visual art.

I created an official Facebook page for my production company ‘FML Productions’ so that I could ensure a professional setting and post any work and portfolios on there, as well as being able to communicate with people easily. Also, a group of fellow students and myself are working on an independent short film this coming Summer, we have received a good amount of funding and pre-production has gone perfectly so we are all ready to film on time. Tash, the writer set up a Facebook page for the film ‘Once Bitten Twice Shy’ that includes updates of our progress, posters, information and it helps us raise awareness of the film.

After working on our TV studio websites on wix.com and seeing how easy it is to create a website we also decided to create a website for the film, which again, was set up and designed by the scriptwriter. We included information on the film on the site, and cast and crew profiles to raise awareness of everyone involved. We each wrote a paragraph about ourselves and our roles, which were then posted onto the site. We also added social links to the films official Facebook and Twitter pages so that the audience can get more involved and interact with the project.

We have been able to apply everything we have learnt from this module and put it into practise for our own brands, projects, and profiles and I have found that if done correctly, it really works. So I would definitely say my professional profile has expanding, and will continue to. I have learnt a lot about how to present myself and my work to the industry and to the world, and how to promote, fundraise and apply for opportunities. It’s all about knowing where to look, or where to post…and it really makes a difference.

Week Five TV Studio

This is it…our final week before the live show!


More time would be nice, although honestly after this weeks success I am confident we will pull it off. The start of the week we encountered a few problems, we starting planning and practising questions for the Storm Trooper, but were still waiting for him to respond and confirm. Also our timings keep changing and for some reason; despite filling 10 minutes (leaving 2 minutes for the performance at the end of the show) Tuesday’s session left us short – and we were all slightly confused as to what had changed. Other than that it was running smoothly, and falling into place well.

As we got into midweek things improved dramatically…

The final script was uploaded to the Facebook group for the presenters to learn and go over, and more importantly we had some new and really impressive graphics created by our producer, Laura uploaded onto the Facebook group, we all gave our feedback and the overall consensus of the group were in favour of using the graphics and everyone was really happy with the outcome. It definitely fit the theme with the starry, outer-space background and engaged the viewers attention straight away, which is what we want when introducing a show. On the 9th we got an expert confirmed, which was a huge relief. Our expert: Michael Soper is currently researching electroquantics, investigates UFOs, he has written and been published many times in the field of science, maths and more specifically UFO’s and he seems like a perfect guest for our show. The script writer got straight onto writing up some questions for the presenters to ask him for our last few run through sessions.

In terms of sound I have all of the levels sorted, we have been lucky in that nothing has peaked or had any particular trouble – all except for some trouble with interference still, this is an annoyance but, generally it has worked fine. I noticed some problems with the radio microphones at the end of Friday’s session. Normally if there is a problem with the microphones I can fix it but this was a pretty strange noise, and we ran out of time before I could really look into it, the lavalier packs were working fine and there were no problems with the rifle microphone so I knew it would be a case of going through the lavalier packs menu and seeing what exactly was not right. We also decided to hire SM58 microphones as well (two of these) for the live performance, which has also been confirmed – a member of the crew knows a band and the frontman was happy to come a long and play his guitar and sing. As rifle microphones don’t pick up musical instruments too well, and SM58’s are widely used amongst singers and work brilliantly. As I have used them before for musical shows such as ‘We Will Rock You’ I think they will give us a clear and pleasing outcome.

We’ve just entered the final few weeks as we have now headed into May.

We have a well established Twitter, Facebook and YouTube page so we can add external links to our website and this is in keeping with our audience participation. The VT team have been uploading all their work onto the YouTube channel so we can see what they have done and it’s all looking really good.

Unfortunately, our studio session on the 2nd of May was cancelled as many people were not able to come; but we had a session on the 30th and a three and a half hour session on the 3rd of May so we didn’t really miss out. We have been in the position this week where we are able to run through the whole show (obviously our performance isn’t in the studio with us, neither is the expert) but we are accounting for this and practising the interview with the expert now anyway with a stand in (Laura the producer) so the presenters can get used to the types of questions they need to ask, how to respond, and improvisation if necessary. The presenters are doing really well, they’re definitely becoming more fluent and relaxed now they know the script and it’s looking good.

We managed to get our Sennheiser radio microphones this week, we set them up with no problems, and got a good signal through – for a while. People not turning their phones off in the studio can cause interference with the lavalier packs, which produces feedback coming through the speakers, this I really do not want on the day! And it’s not very nice to listen to in the mean time. Also, set put up a  plasma ball on a stand – it looks really good and it’s definitely effective. Unfortunately…when turned on plasma balls interfere with electric devices, which are crew noticed as it can alter things on your phone and it’s comical, but it interfered quite heavily with the radio microphones frequencies and this did not sound good at all. When turned off it was fine, the lava lamp had no interference and we got through a productive session.

Our expert has unfortunately fallen short after asking for £80 and then not replying to the producer so we are considering the Coventry StormTrooper – so we’ll have to see where this ends up but it should be finalised soon.

The P.A’s have been posting their timings so far; we still have not met the 12 minute mark, we are quite short at the moment but all of our VT’s have now been filmed, edited and uploaded and we have manage to have run through’s this week with all of the VT’s so we now have a better idea of timings and where we need to fill more time in – for example after our final VT we have decided to include ‘Rey’s review corner’ where he will briefly talk about the documentary and his experience with UFO’s and if the film influenced him.
